OBJECTIVE

Building on practical and in-house cases, we will present and discuss the requirements for developing and implementing an effective safety management approach. Both safety leadership and safety management are addressed. The focus of this training is on “practicing safety”, theoretical models and content is kept to a minimum.
As part of the training, participants will learn to identify the root causes of field findings identified during a field tour, as a basis for implementing a more proactive approach in managing safety.

OBJECTIVE

This training consists of the same modules as the Operational Management Safety training, though the focus is even more on practicing safety in the field, and on integrating safety into the daily life of an operational manager and/or a supervisor.

Safety Training Modules

Module 1

Safety Management/Safety Leadership

Module 1

Safety Management/Safety Leadership

Participants learn in Safety leadership

  • The characteristics of a strong safety leader.
  • How to take your people with you on a safety improvement journey
  • Management of cultural change.
  • Motivating people/applying consequence management.

Participants learn in Safety management

  • The critical components of a safety management system.
  • Setting up a safety organisation.
  • Quality requirement for the most critical safety processes:
    • Safety governance
    • Drafting risk assessments
    • Using standard operating procedures/permit to work
    • Training/providing instructions to operational teams
    • Field visits and field control
    • Optimisation of both safety systems and processes and of your safety culture
    • Incident investigatio

Module 2

Risk assessment

Participants prepare a task-based risk assessment of a standard and repetitive task executed on site. Area, installation and organisational risks are integrated in the task risk assessment.

Module 3

Standard Operating procedure/Permit to work

Participants learn the characteristics of a high-quality safe operating procedure. Based on the risk assessment, they prepare a SOP for the task reviewed in the risk assessment.
Participants also learn the characteristics of an effective permit to work process. Based on the insights gained, they propose recommendations for improvement of the permit to work process on site.

Module 4

Risk Identification and Management (RIM) Talk module

A RIM talk is the ultimate instruction given to the operational teams prior to the start of the actual work. A RIM talk builds on the information available in a standard operating procedure and/or permits, combined with the requirements set by general rules applicable on site. RIM talks are given in the field, and include an assessment of the working place prior to the start of the work.

Module 5

Risk Identification and Management (RIM) Walk module

A RIM walk is a field visit during which real-life risks are identified, risk mitigation practices are reviewed, and critical documents like SOPs, permits and risk assessments are checked. A RIM walk is also a behavioural audit, though its focus is broader and includes the review of risk management processes and practices at team, contractor and  and at site level.

Module 6

Risk Identification and Management (RIM) Meeting module

The RIM meeting is the meeting during which the findings of a RIM walk or a series of RIM walks are analysed, discussed and recommendations for improvement are formulated. It's aim is to detect root causes of field findings, and to pitch recommendations focused on safety processes and site culture, rather than on the behaviour of an individual or a team.
